LPG Information and Advice

LPG Industrial Applications

What is LPG?

LPG, liquified petroleum gas, is the generic name for propane and butane gases. Often referred to as Calor Gas, the brand name of the largest supplier, LPG is renowned for its flexibility, mobility and clean burning properties, allowing it to be used across a wide range of applications.

LPG, is hydrocarbon fuel, lighter than petroleum, occurring naturally in oil and gas fields or extracted in the oil refining process. These high quality gases are very suitable for compact storage and transport in liquid form, in pressurised bulk vessels or cylinders.

What is the difference between Propane, Butane and LPG?

Propane and butane are produced either by the separation of these products from crude oil or as a by-product of refinery operations. They both exist as gases at normal atmospheric pressure and temperatures, but they have the special property of becoming liquid at atmospheric temperature if moderately compressed, and reverting back to gases when the pressure is sufficiently reduced. As such this allows them to be easily transformed into a liquid, in which state they are roughly 250 times as dense as they are when gases, which can be easily transported and stored, and hence they are both collectively known as Liquefied Petroleum Gases or LPG.

How green is LPG as a fossil fuel?

LPG is lead and sulphur free and so omits less greenhouse gas emissions than other alternative fuels. LPG is a very calorific product, and has a low carbon content that can reduce the emission of carbon dioxide.
